Surrendering to the Ancestors

Surrender is one of the most important parts of your spiritual journey. There comes a point when you have to stop believing that you must know everything, understand everything, control everything, or see every step before you take it. Surrender says, “I may not know what comes next, but I trust who is guiding me.”

When you surrender to your purpose, to your ancestors, to the Holy Spirit, and ultimately to God, you are making room to be led. You are saying, I trust that what is meant for me will be revealed to me. I trust that I will be redirected when I am going the wrong way. I trust that I will be warned when something is not for me. I trust that I will be protected while I am learning. And I trust that I am loved throughout the entire journey.

This is also how covenant is built. A covenant is deeper than simply asking for protection when you are afraid or calling upon your spiritual foundation only when you need something. Covenant requires relationship, commitment, obedience, trust, and surrender. You are establishing a sacred agreement concerning how you will walk, who you will walk with, and what you are willing to trust even when you cannot yet see the outcome.

As that covenant becomes stronger, your protection becomes rooted. You are not building protection from fear; you are building it from relationship. You are establishing something that is set in stone—sealed, chained, bound, and spiritually guarded. What has been established between you and God cannot simply be dismantled by another person’s opinion, jealousy, interference, or intention. What has been established through your relationship with your ancestors is something you continue to honor, strengthen, and protect.

This is why surrender does not mean weakness. Surrender is trust. It is recognizing that you do not have to carry the entire journey by yourself. You can listen. You can be corrected. You can be redirected. You can admit, “I don’t know.” And you can still move forward because you trust that God, the Holy Spirit, and the ancestral wisdom you honor will continue to guide you.

Jesus speaks about the spiritual weight of binding and loosing in Matthew 18:18:

“Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” — Matthew 18:18 (KJV)

So be intentional about what you bind yourself to and what you loose yourself from. Bind yourself to God. Bind yourself to your purpose. Bind yourself to truth, wisdom, discipline, protection, and the covenant you are building. Loose yourself from fear, control, confusion, doubt, unhealthy attachments, and the belief that you must understand everything before you can trust.

You do not have to know everything to be guided.

You do not have to see everything to be protected.

You do not have to control everything to be safe.

Sometimes the next level of your spiritual journey begins with one sentence:

“I surrender, and I trust.”
